Sole Width
Sole width refers to how wide the bottom of the clubhead is from front to back.
Wider soles add forgiveness by helping the club glide through the turf rather than dig. They also position more mass low in the head, which can help launch the ball higher with more consistency. Narrow soles provide more versatility and allow skilled players to manipulate the club more easily, especially from tight lies.
Fitters look at sole width to match the club to the golfer’s swing style and typical course conditions. Steeper swingers or those who play on softer turf often benefit from wider soles that keep the club from digging. Shallow swingers or players on firm ground tend to prefer narrower soles for cleaner turf interaction.
Choosing the right sole width helps improve contact quality, maintain consistent trajectory, and support better overall iron and wedge performance.
