Spin Axis
Spin axis describes the tilt of the ball’s spin as it flies through the air.
Instead of thinking about “side spin” and “backspin” separately, the spin axis shows how the ball is rotating in three dimensions. A level (neutral) spin axis produces a straight shot. A left-tilted spin axis curves the ball left (draw or hook), and a right-tilted spin axis curves it right (fade or slice). The greater the tilt, the more the ball curves.
Fitters rely on spin axis because it gives a clear picture of why the ball is moving the way it is. The tilt is determined by the relationship between the clubface and the club path at impact. By adjusting things like lie angle, face angle settings, shaft characteristics, or head design, fitters can help reduce extreme tilt and produce a more controllable flight.
Understanding spin axis is essential for diagnosing curvature and tightening dispersion.
