Attack Angle

Attack angle describes whether the clubhead is moving up, level, or down at the moment it strikes the ball. A positive attack angle means the club is traveling upward through impact, which is common with drivers to help increase launch and reduce spin. A negative attack angle means the club is moving downward, which is normal with irons because players need to compress the ball and take a divot.

Fitters watch attack angle closely because it affects launch, spin, and overall ball flight.

A driver hit with a steep downward attack angle can lose distance and produce too much spin. Irons hit with too shallow of an angle can lead to thin shots and inconsistent contact. Adjustments to ball position, tee height, shaft selection, and club setup can all help fine-tune attack angle so the golfer gets the most out of each club.
