Variable Face Thickness (VFT)
Variable Face Thickness (VFT)
Variable Face Thickness is a face-design method where different areas of the clubface are engineered with varying thicknesses.
Thinner sections flex more at impact, helping maintain ball speed on off-center strikes. Thicker sections provide stability and support where needed. The goal is to create a larger effective sweet spot so mishits perform closer to centered shots.
Fitters look at VFT because it improves consistency for a wide range of golfers. When the face maintains ball speed across a bigger portion of the surface, distance loss and directional penalties are reduced. VFT is most common in drivers, fairway woods, and modern irons, and it’s one of the key technologies behind today’s higher forgiveness levels.
