Shaft Flex
Shaft flex describes how much the shaft bends during the swing.
Common flex ratings include L, A, R, S, X, and TX, but these labels vary by manufacturer and don’t guarantee identical stiffness across brands. Flex influences how the club loads in the backswing and releases into impact. If the shaft is too soft, the clubface can arrive too closed or feel unstable. If it’s too stiff, the golfer may struggle to square the face or create enough launch and spin.
Fitters choose shaft flex based on swing speed, tempo, and how aggressively the golfer transitions at the top. They watch ball flight and strike location to see whether the shaft is helping or hurting consistency. The right flex supports a natural release, improves face control, and leads to more predictable launch, spin, and dispersion.
