Face Angle
Face angle describes the direction the clubface is pointing at impact relative to the target line.
If the face is pointed left, it’s closed. If it’s pointed right, it’s open. Face angle has the biggest influence on the ball’s starting line, and it works with club path to determine how much the ball curves. A face that’s only a couple of degrees open or closed can shift the ball significantly offline.
Fitters monitor face angle because it shows how the golfer naturally delivers the club. If a player consistently returns the face open, they may benefit from a different head style, loft setting, or lie angle to help square it more easily. If it’s too closed, adjustments can help prevent over-curving shots. Understanding face angle helps the fitter choose equipment that supports the player’s typical delivery instead of forcing major swing changes.
